Screen Recording in Windows 11 | Built-In Tools and OBS

Windows 11 already includes tools for recording the screen. Snipping Tool is suitable for quick captures, Xbox Game Bar records apps and games with sound, and Clipchamp combines screen recording with webcam footage and editing. For longer recordings or more control, use the free OBS Studio.

Screen Recording in Windows 11

Record a Selected Area with Snipping Tool

Snipping Tool is the fastest way to record a specific part of the screen.

Press:

Windows + Shift + R

Draw a rectangle around the area you want to capture, then click Start. When finished, click Stop.

You can preview the video, save it, or send it to Clipchamp for trimming and editing. Microsoft confirms that Snipping Tool supports recording a rectangular selection of any part of the screen.

You can also start it manually:

  1. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
  2. Select the Record button.
  3. Click New.
  4. Select the recording area.
  5. Click Start.

This method works well for short tutorials, Windows settings, browser pages, error messages, and software demonstrations.

Snipping Tool records only the selected area. Use Xbox Game Bar or OBS when you need better audio control or longer recordings.

Record an App or Game with Xbox Game Bar

Xbox Game Bar can record an active application or game without installing additional software.

Open the program you want to capture and press:

Windows + Alt + R

Press the same shortcut again to stop recording.

To enable or disable the microphone while recording, press:

Windows + Alt + M

Open the full Game Bar interface with:

Windows + G

Recordings are saved as MP4 files in:

Videos > Captures

The filename includes the recorded application name, date, and time.

Xbox Game Bar is useful for games, programs, browser windows, and software tutorials. It is not the best option for recording the Windows desktop, File Explorer, or several applications at once.

Include System Audio

Press:

Windows + G

Open Settings, select Capturing, and choose All under the audio recording options.

This allows Game Bar to capture application sound, game audio, and other system audio instead of recording only the selected game or program.

Check the Windows volume mixer before starting. An application that is muted in Windows will also be silent in the final recording.

Use:

Windows + Alt + M

to turn microphone commentary on or off during the recording.

Record the Screen and Webcam with Clipchamp

Microsoft Clipchamp is useful when the final video needs webcam footage, captions, text, trimming, or simple editing.

Open Clipchamp and create a new video. Select:

Record & create

Then choose:

Screen

or:

Screen & camera

Allow access to the camera and microphone, select the screen, window, or browser tab you want to capture, and start recording.

After stopping, Clipchamp places the recording on the editing timeline. You can remove unwanted sections, adjust the sound, reposition the webcam, add titles, and export the finished video as MP4.

For browser-tab audio, select the required tab and enable the audio-sharing option before recording. Clipchamp’s personal version may not capture full system audio when recording an entire screen or application window, so Xbox Game Bar or OBS is more reliable when computer audio is important.

Record the Full Screen with OBS Studio

OBS Studio is a free, open-source recorder for Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is the better option for long tutorials, full-desktop capture, multiple monitors, separate audio sources, streaming, and higher-quality recordings.

Download OBS only from its official website and install it normally.

When OBS starts, run the Auto-Configuration Wizard or configure it manually.

In the Sources panel, click the plus button and select:

Display Capture

Use this to record an entire monitor.

Select:

Window Capture

when you only want one program.

OBS normally detects desktop audio and the default microphone automatically. Check the audio meters before starting. If they do not move, open:

Settings > Audio

Select the correct speakers, headphones, or microphone.

Click:

Start Recording

When finished, return to OBS and click:

Stop Recording

To find the saved file, open:

File > Show Recordings

You can change the destination folder under:

Settings > Output > Recording Path

OBS is more powerful than the built-in Windows tools, but it requires a few minutes of setup.
